Countdown to Baku and Belém: Can the Next Two COPs Deliver on Climate Action?

Saturday, 7 September 2024

20:15 - 21:15 (GMT+7)

The clock is ticking. Global temperatures on average have breached the 1.5°C threshold on average in the past year, yet nations continue to fall short of the Paris Agreement. Rising temperatures are fueling extreme weather, food insecurity, water scarcity, economic instability, even conflict. If we fail to curb global emissions, our planet will face irreversible damage. Millions will be displaced, plunged into poverty, and nearly two-thirds of the world's cities will be threatened by rising seas.

The upcoming COPs in Baku and Belém are pivotal. While COP-28 marked a historic pledge to transition away from fossil fuels, these meetings must address existing loopholes and demonstrate the political will to deliver true climate action. The panel “Countdown to Baku and Belém: Can the Next Two COPs Deliver on Climate Action?” will explore strategies to ensure these COPs drive meaningful progress on mitigation and adaptation, establish new financial goals for vulnerable nations, and foster collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society. The goal is clear: to ensure no country and no communities are left behind in the fight against climate change.
