The Promise of Universality: A North-South Debate on How to Promote And Protect Human Rights for All

In an increasingly interconnected world, the dialogue on human rights requires a global perspective that bridges the North-South divide. This session will convene a diverse panel of experts and practitioners from different civil society movements, to explore in practical and actionable terms gaps found and how they are addressing them in fulfilling and protecting human rights from their respective perspectives. . Participants will gain insights into the universal and region-specific challenges in promoting and protecting human rights, fostering a deeper understanding and collaboration across borders.


The speakers will address critical human rights topics such as freedom of speech, indigenous rights, protection of human rights and environmental defenders, and an overview of the landscape of human rights today. They will explore the universal importance of these issues while also emphasizing region-specific challenges and solutions. A central theme of the session will be the examination of human rights gaps in both the Global North and South.. By sharing unique perspectives and engaging in a balanced dialogue, the speakers aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the global human rights situation, challenge biases, and inspire collaborative efforts for more equitable and effective human rights policies worldwide. We expect a compelling and thought-provoking discussion.
