The ongoing crises in Ukraine and Palestine and their impacts in the global economy and the upholding of international law demand urgent global attention. Millions and billions of dollars have been devoted to humanitarian assistance in Palestine and Ukraine, reflecting the hope to improve the situation of civilians in both regions. The increasing number of deaths and civilian casualties, as well as the prolonging of armed struggle, show however the deficiency in the efforts. With the ceaseless suffering of civilians, political narratives have developed, questioning the contribution of external parties in regional conflict, affecting domestic political legitimacy.
This session will critically examine the diverging and converging points in the narratives surrounding both conflicts, highlighting international responses, and taking into account both national and international pressure against international actors. By focusing on the humanitarian impacts and needs, as well as the geopolitical dynamics at play in these two examples, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities of regional conflict. The session is expected to bring together diverse perspectives to identify common grounds and discuss pathways towards a more just and equitable global future.
