Session 9

Food for Thought: Recipes for Global Food Security Amidst Crisis

Saturday, 7 September 2024

19:00 - 20:00 (GMT+7)

In an era marked by climate change, rising costs, and geopolitical conflicts that weaponize starvation, securing the food chain has never been more critical. With the advancement of science and technology , agricultural innovation offers hope for enhancing global food resilience through improved productivity, sustainability, and adaptability to climate change. Meanwhile, the world also requires a robust global governance initiative to mitigate the impact of global conflicts on the food chain. For instance, the ongoing war in Ukraine has disrupted global wheat distribution, leading to sustained price increases of 2-3% above pre-war levels. Given that 35% of the world's population relies on wheat as a primary dietary component, these disruptions have significant implications for food security worldwide. Furthermore, starvation has been utilized as a weapon of war in regions like Gaza and Sudan, exacerbating food insecurity, with the World Food Programme reporting that 42.3 million people are currently facing emergency levels of hunger mostly coming from these areas. Hence, ensuring food security is a collective challenge that demands our concerted efforts to resolve.

Against this backdrop, this session will discuss groundbreaking agricultural technologies, innovative farming practices, and strategic policies designed to protect and enhance food security, resilience and the social movements underpinning these efforts. Furthermore, panelists will examine case studies of successful resilience strategies and explore how to adapt these lessons to different contexts globally. Whether our audience is a policymaker, farmer, researcher, or concerned citizen, this session will provide them with valuable insights and actionable strategies to help ensure a resilient and secure food system for the future.
